Student Leader Mosaic

During Art Week the young leaders of Whakapoungakau were invited to attend a mosaic art workshop, with local artist and art teacher Janet Keen. While there the students crafted a stunning mosaic, which will hang above each classroom at Glenholme School

Check out Janet Keen's blog which showcases our super students. So proud of how these students represented our school.

Week 9 ART MANIA!

Week 9 has been all about Art, Art, Art with a bit more Art a few games and a little bit of music.
Students have been busy making and creating all sorts of fantastic things and it all started with glass art on Friday of Week 7.

Students began the Monday of week 9 making the foundations of giant paper mache bugs. They had to research a NZ insect and then recreate it using paper mache. It took ages for the paper mache to dry! While it was drying students got on with shaping a tile made out of salt dough. The tile had to depict a picture of flora and fauna of New Zealand. This led to more waiting while the tiles baked veerrrry sloooowly in the oven. Once cooked the tiles were painted white, left to dry and then given their coat of many colours and glitter.

By Tuesday the paper mache was finally dry so we were able to coat our paper mache with un-printed newsprint (this makes it easier to paint when dry), this was the day that we also spent painting sheets of paper in cool colours, this paper was what we were going to use to make our Eric Carl inspired collages. Eric Carl is the very clever artist/author who wrote the very hungry caterpillar. We planned our pictures and once our art paper was dry we got to creating our collage masterpieces.

Wednesday came -another sunny day thankfully! We were able to keep painting our paper mache, salt dough tiles and put together our collages. It was also the day that we started our Warren Pohatu jigsaw style art. For this we all got a tiny piece of the whole picture, We then had to draw exactly what was on the small bit of paper, onto a bigger bit of paper and colour and blend it using pastels. Once completed we put all the pieces back together and amazingly it looked like the original picture (kind of).

Thursday was our final touches day, we finished everything, we also managed to do some Zen Doodle/Dye art butterflies. Whaea Jules saved the day and came in to help us hot glue legs and antennae onto our bugs. We practiced our assembly song and played some games. It was pretty wet today so we were glad that most of what we needed to dry was already dry.

Friday, it was all on! Get the classroom ready, set up displays and then woohoo a chance to show off our talent and celebrate the other talented students around the school as we got to tour their classrooms.

What an art-tastic week!
