Topic Homework Term 4 2017 Classification and Evolution
You are a scientist who has just discovered a new animal species! As every good scientist does, you must document your exciting finding. Design a fact sheet highlighting this new animal
discovery.
Your newly discovered animal must have at least one physical
characteristic from each of the 5 vertebrate classes. (Mammals, fish, reptiles, birds, amphibians). You need to justify why you have chosen each characteristic for your animal (why is this characteristic important?)
You must also include the following pieces of information:
Your animal’s name
Your animal’s basic needs
Where your animal lives
A coloured illustration of your animal with labels to it’s
characteristics taken from each of the 5 classes

Term 1 SOLO Taxonomy Topic- Living Things
Our focus in term 1 has been on living things. Part of this was looking at the life processes of living things and why these are so important. We focused our time looking at the Tuatara, investigating the living processes that enable them to live their life here in Aotearoa. To do this, we used the MRS GREN acronym: M-ovement, R-eproduction, S-ensitivity, G-rowth, R-espiration, E-xtretion and N-utrition.

Boys, I have marked you between multistructural and relational because most areas of MRS GREN have been explained using ‘because’ statements, to give more detail and explanation, however other areas are very brief with no explanation.
Next Step: Give several ideas for each area and ensure that you are giving clear explanation about why these occur or why they are important to the Tuatara.

Bryson, I have placed your information as multistructural because you have been able to come up with a number of ideas and facts about the life processes of the Tuatara.
Next Step: To reach relational, you need to explain why these things affect the life of the Tuatara, using ‘because’ statements.

I have put you two between unistructural and multistructural because for many of your life processes you only have one idea, however others you have explained briefly why these occur.
Next Step: To develop your thinking, I would like to see you come up with several ideas for each section and then try to explain why these occur.

I have marked the information on your poster as sitting between multistructural and relational as you have many ideas and you are beginning to use ‘because’ statements to give more information.
Next Step: To reach relational, you need to explain in detail why these things are the way they are and relate them back to the Tuatara.

Girls, your detailed and elaborated explanations are fantastic. Not only have you given ‘because’ statements, but you have then related it back to the Tuatara to give even more explanation.
Next Step: To reach extended abstract, I would like to see you making connections with other animals and even perhaps talk about the consequences for the Tuatara is these life processes were not met.

I have put you girls between multistructural and relational because half of your MRS GREN life processes have great information and you have explain why these are important for the Tuatara. However, other areas such as Sensitivity, have the wrong information or have not been explained to give further information.
Next Step: To develop your thinking, it is important that you are always explaining your thinking and making connections with the wider world.
